Attendee Requirements

Participants should have:

  •  A basic understanding of at least one programming language (e.g., Python or JavaScript), including writing functions, loops, and conditionals.
  •  Familiarity with a code editor or IDE (e.g., VS Code).
  •  Basic experience using version control systems like Git (e.g., making commits, using GitHub).
  •  General understanding of how to run and test code locally.
  •  Some exposure to reading other people’s code (helpful but not mandatory).

This introduction to coding training course, aka Coding 101, equip students with the skills to write clean, maintainable, and scalable code, understand software architecture basics, and confidently conduct and receive code reviews—including AI-assisted reviews.

Module 1: Foundations of Code Quality
 What is "Quality Code"?
o    Readability, maintainability, testability
o    Anti-patterns and code smells
 Naming, Formatting, and Conventions
o    Variable and function naming
o    Indentation, spacing, file structure
o    Formatters (e.g., Black, Prettier)


Module 2: Structuring Code for Scale
Functions and Modularity
o    Single-responsibility principle (SRP)
o    Avoiding long functions and deep nesting
Organizing Larger Projects
o    Folder structures (by feature or layer)
o    Separation of concerns


Module 3: Clean Code and Refactoring
•    Writing Clean Functions
o    Inputs, outputs, and side effects
o    Docstrings and inline documentation
•    Refactoring for Improvement
o    Removing dead code
o    Refactoring sessions with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT

Module 4: Introduction to Code Reviews
•     Why Review Code?
o    Catching bugs, enforcing standards, knowledge sharing
o    Psychological safety and feedback culture
•    How to Do a Code Review
o    Reviewing PRs on GitHub
o    Using checklists and structured comments
o    Tools: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket

o    Submitting code to ChatGPT/Copilot for feedback
o    Asking for refactoring or optimization suggestions
o    Limitations and verification of AI responses

Module 6: AI-Enhanced Coding Productivity
GitHub Copilot Deep Dive
o    Autocomplete and documentation generation
o    Copilot for tests, comments, boilerplate
o    Ethical use of AI: plagiarism, verification
Code Review and Improvement with AI
