JavaScript is the world’s most used programming language1. Not only is it the web's most widespread programming language, it is increasingly used outside the web too. Server-side applications are written in JavaScript with node.js; Windows 10 has JavaScript support at its core. And tools such as Electron and React Native enable desktop and mobile apps to be delivered using JavaScript. And yet JavaScript remains a difficult language to learn well. Its potholes and hurdles can lead to frustration debugging a program that doesn't work. In this Introduction to JavaScript training course you will learn JavaScript from the ground up. We'll start with the very basics, like syntax, data types and control flow. And we won't even build apps for a web browser to start with, so your skills will be transferable to other platforms too. We'll explore the building blocks: arrays, objects, functions, scope, and introduce interesting topics like callbacks and closures. We'll look at how to build applications in JavaScript, and you'll get plenty of practice in class, with help available. We'll also understand how to gain confidence that our application works by utilising unit testing.

Objectives

On completion of this course, you will:

  • Understand JavaScript's core language constructs and how it differs from other languages
  • Appreciate JavaScript as a multi-paradigm language and how it supports imperative, object oriented and functional styles
  • Have written a variety of simple JavaScript applications
  • Appreciate the JavaScript standardization process, which versions are available, and some of the differences between ES5, ES6 (ES2015), and more recent versions
  • Understand how JavaScript relates to and interacts with the browser BOM, DOM and XMLHttpRequest objects
  • Appreciate certain conventions for writing JavaScript idiomatically
  • Understand the difficulties in writing asynchronous code and some of the solutions
  • Have used a variety of tools for modern JavaScript development
